Lenten Drawings is a collection of forty graphite drawings created by Grant Thomas during the seasons of Lent in 2023 and 2024. This series captures the stark beauty of desert landscapes and the animals that inhabit them, offering a quiet meditation on patience, endurance, and the sacred rhythms of nature.
Drawing inspiration from the biblical story of the Israelites’ journey through the desert after their deliverance from Egypt, these drawings reflect the themes of wandering, guidance, and spiritual reflection. In the Book of Exodus, the Israelites followed the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, symbols of God’s presence guiding them through the wilderness. In much the same way, these drawings serve as a visual pilgrimage, tracing the artist’s own journey through Lent, where each image becomes a marker of reflection and transformation.
The subtle shading and delicate detail of each graphite drawing evoke the stillness and resilience of the desert, inviting the viewer to pause and consider the deeper meanings found in the natural world.
